One of the biggest issues of our time should be religion versus atheism. People are going into debates about that everywhere, from schoolyards to pubs, from Europe to America, all kinds of people, ordinary, young and old, scientists, artists, thinkers, comedians.
These debates never fail to enrage me. Even more so, they make me incredibly sad and full of despair. What has the world come to, and what else is here still to be revealed?
All the pain and suffering in the world comes down to this aspect of dualism that is hidden - or sometimes admittedly present - in these verbal fights. It's a virtual war where only words collide - for some higher truth, that is imagined to be possessed on both sides - but will it go on? Will our rage towards each other destroy us?
I'm often suspected an atheist - since I don't share the belief in an entity that is sometimes depicted as antropomorph (which adds to the ridiculousness, but is at the same time irrelevant) and somehow governs the world that was created by it. I'm not a fan of deism either where the God, after having done his duty resigns and lets all hell break loose. These ideas are simply very far from my life experience, and can not be used as a valid metaphor either. On top of that, some believe that their prayer works as a request sent to an address unknown, and that they can successfully pray for money, well-being, for any of their petty business to turn out alright. Prayer in my opinion is auto-suggestion and might work that way, but there's no higher entity to send bliss our way. The only entity is us, me, the self. Our willpower.
I dread to be called an atheist though. To me atheists sometimes seem even more miserable than the side they are to oppose. First of all - why even bother trying to change the mind of a christian nut? That's one of the most irrational things to do, and any Knight of Intellect and Reason should be aware of that. So the attacks might be explained as an informative propaganda against the mind-numbing bullshit of the church? Religion is not a relevant factor anymore, neither in the media, nor in education. If someone is a believer, it sure runs in the family or he caught it from friends. Fewer and fewer people fall for that, and if they do, they deserve to fall. With today's outburst of knowledge, you have to be mental to go that way, and if you are, you most certainly won't listen to sound reasoning. Atheism provides a very good armour for those who are not confident enough and need constant reinforcement that they are "better". This is an old game, and it's getting older every day. Who's right, who's wrong? Who is the stupid one? Most of the world's intellectual, creative energy killed on the altar of this unworthy cause.
Why chase around a long-bearded, imaginary man when there's the whole of existence to be contemplated?
As of this, and any binary situation, I choose to not take sides.
When you flip a coin, there's a period of time before you see the outcome. It's not 0 and it's not 1. It's X. It's only a possibility, a virtual territory where nothing is defined and fixed. I prefer to keep my mind on this area, as much as I can. While the coin is in the air, anything can happen. At least two alternate universes are embedded in this very moment: A or B, waiting to become reality. It may so happen, that the coin never touches your palm - maybe a crow flies away with it, maybe an asteroid hits the Earth and all explodes.
Or, perhaps, the coin lands on its edge.
